Kafuta Tumbung Village Project - The Gambia

Well what a trip we had this year.

We arrived to find a country in limbo and holding its breath whilst the president decided on whether to fight to stay in power after being defeated in the election. You probably saw on the news that as tensions rose foreigners were told to leave. We therefore had to leave at very short notice and without getting to the village, as travelling within The Gambia was hard.

We did our best to leave funds to get food for the village as food was in short supply and expensive before we left. As soon as we got back we organised to return on the first flight back. Which we did at the beginning of February, and finally made it to the village to an amazing welcome including an escort from the army !!! Through the generosity of a St John’s Church on the Island every child in the nursery school received a toy and through other donations we also had some clothes to hand out plus we had some plush dinosaurs from Shanklin Hotel & Accommodation Association which took some explaining! Pictures above show the children receiving their gifts, With their proud teacher Yankuba and our nursery football team We also had gifts for all our sponsored children. Great fun was had by all.

We now have 80 children attending the school and 31 children have sponsors.

The school is doing well and we are very close to being fully registered as we near completion of the last requirement, which is the third classroom. The funds have been raised to get it completed and furnished in time for the new school year and we are looking to recruit a teacher over the summer holidays. Unfortunately whilst we were there the toilet block developed a crack so we will be looking to get funds together to repair and improve the facilities over the summer.

We are also starting our biggest project to date and that is building a second school next to the nursery for 7-12 year olds. Our sponsored children will transfer to this once completed. The school will have 6 classrooms, an office and library, that’s a lot of blocks to be made! The children said they wanted to help raise funds so some of our sponsored children asked for some paints, which we supplied, and they have painted a picture on some cloth which they asked us to bring back to sell which will do in the shop this season. If you would like one please contact us for details. We now have a facebook page – Kafuta Tumbung Village Project – if you want to keep up to date, with photos and videos being regularly posted. As always please email or phone whenever you want more information on the school and the children.

Best wishes Lisa, Derick & All the children, Staff & Families
